“When one thinks of Plettenberg Bay, wading hippos and galloping red hartebees do not come into it. But, actually, there’s a lot more to the Garden Route than golden beaches and amazing swimming. Tucked away on a private game reserve in the Bitou River Valley, this bush hideaway is an oasis of tranquility and mesmerising surroundings, where no expense has been spared to ensure a truly unforgettable experience. Passionate owners Kathy and Leon de Kock purchased this spectacular escape in 2005, and have since turned the former bush hideout of Baron van Plettenberg, the governor of the Cape of Good Hope from 1771 to 1785, into an incredible passage between past and present, where peace and relaxation are par for the course. “
“When we visited Belle Balance we loved the old soul feeling of the property and its sturdy, integrous stone walls that open out to the most magnificent views of the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Having access to a spa whilst being immersed in nature adds to the owner’s ethos of wellness and harmony. Every room is beautifully styled and furnished in fine fabrics to weave an understated, contemporary safari theme and sheer comfort.”
The Belle Balance experiance
The Belle Balance Story
When Katherine and Leon de Kock first visited an old dairy farm on the outskirts of Plettenberg Bay in 2005 they knew they had found that special space they had been searching for. The couple envisioned creating a bush sanctuary that would be integrated with and perfectly complement the serene natural setting. Belle Balance, as the name suggests, welcomes one to a space that is restorative, rejuvenating, and removed from the pace and commotion of everyday urban life. The establishment of the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve and reintroduction of animals to this fertile land was the first step in their vision to create a bush hideout in the Garden Route. Over 30 different types of animals have been reintroduced to the game reserve, which now boasts elephants, rhino, and giraffes. The dwelling on the game reserve was once the bush hideaway of Baron van Plettenberg, the governor of the Cape of Good Hope from 1771–1785. The walls of his old homestead still stand today and are an integral part of Belle Balance, adding to the feeling imparted to visitors of having escaped to a bygone era.
The couple’s opportunity to realise their vision for a peaceful, bush getaway with an intimate spa suddenly presented itself when the national lockdown was announced. The next few months witnessed the complete transformation of the old lodge. Care and attention to detail mark every corner of Belle Balance. Each room tells its own story with unique pieces of antique furniture that have been collected over the years. Soft, neutral tones are combined with wooden features and leather effects to create a warm and inviting ambiance. The furnishings are luxurious, yet simple and understated, and accentuate the natural beauty of the environment. The stoep invites one to marvel at uninterrupted views of the Tsitsikamma Mountains or observe the comings and goings of many animals to the watering hole. It is everywhere apparent that Belle Balance is a labour of love in which carefully selected elements unite to create a tranquil space that truly allows one to unwind and replenish the soul.
